Defining your keywords

Use an online tool like WordTracker to establish a small but well-defined set of keywords that will produce customers. This is much more fundamental than many online businesses realise.

Example: After this exercise was carried out by an online dinner party games retailer, they were able to become a profitable online business. How focussed were they?...
The company is called Murder Mystery Games Ltd. Their main web address is www.murdermysterygames.co.uk, the title of their homepage is "Murder Mystery Games and the first words on their site are "murder mystery games"
...this is no coincidence.

Not thinking about keywords before you design your page is one of the biggest mistakes that many designers make. Equally, designing your web site with marketing in mind can put you ahead of the competition before you've even started!

Try and think of one primary key phrase that best describes your site and services. try and think of what people who use your site might type in to a search engine to find you.

First try using the free Overture suggestion tool to get an idea of alternative phrases and how popular the phrase you have chosen is. Jot down a few of the best phrases and keywords. Remember that the Overture tool is not perfect - it cannot recognise plurals, for example, and sometimes returns inaccurate results. For more reliable and better researched results, use WordTracker, which you can try out for free.

Some people find that choosing the right keywords is a lengthy and time-consuming process. If you would prefer a professional analysis, get an in-depth keyword report.
